The results are in – and they’re delicious! Our province-wide #MiniRecipeBC contest inspired participants from communities all over to post eats, treats and sweets - highlighting the abundance of food our region has to offer! The rules were simple: post a recipe that used five ingredients or less featuring two local ingredients.

Our randomly selected winners provided beautiful BC-based recipes with a blend of tried-and-true staples and unique ingredients, creating flavour-packed fare for all palates. Nothing delights us more than celebrating mouthwatering recipes made from local ingredients.

Let’s dig in!

Grand Prize Winner: Bon L - BC Pink Smoothie

Think pink for your next drink! Blended with local BC’s fresh-picked peaches, Greek yogurt and milk, this strawberry-based smoothie will have you sipping for more. A quick buzz in the blender and voila! It’s the simple things in life. Serve this smoothie for breakfast or a creamy refreshment between meals.

Week 1 Winner: Ryan M - Seaside Breakfast

A taste of BC! This recipe calls for sea asparagus, also known as Salicornia. This particular variety of sea asparagus is native to BC (and other regions), and can be eaten raw or baked, as this recipe suggests. The salty taste is a natural pairing with seafood and an excellent addition to this Seaside Breakfast. This dish features crusty, baked bread, poached farm fresh egg topped with Salt Spring Island Goat Cheese, perfectly partnered with a slice of bacon.

Week 2 Winner: Amanda S - 5 Ingredient Crab Cakes

A crowd pleaser any time of day, this recipe calls for local Dungeness crab, Saanich eggs (or any eggs purchased from your local market!) and chives from the garden. Dungeness crab is native to the west coast and a popular seafood option, as it’s prized for its sweet and tender flesh. Amanda has mixed in mayonnaise and plain crumbled soda crackers to add a satisfying creamy and crunchy component. Serve with mixed greens or on their own for a delicious west coast snack.

Week 3 Winner: Michelle L - Blueberry Kefir Smoothie Bowl

Kid tested, mother approved! This smoothie bowl encourages smiles all round, using the oh-so-popular BC blueberries, banana, kefir (or yogurt) and local honey. Top to your taste preference with chia seeds, raspberries and granola, this moreish meal can be served as a breakfast, snack or dessert.

Week 4 Winner: Sonja L - Garlic Scape, Parsley Pesto

Garlic, nuts and cheese – yes please! This recipe is the bee’s knees for all your pesto needs. All it requires is a few spins around the food processor with walnuts, parmesan cheese, parsley, garlic scapes and olive oil. This garlic lovers delight is ready to serve to on a cracker, mixed into pasta or as a pizza base sauce. Bon appetite!

The melody of entries and winners are truly a feast for the eyes. We love the mix of locally sourced and homegrown ingredients – a hallmark of what makes BC great! Thank you to everyone that participated.
